October 21: Amy Reisner

2011 was a bit disappointing for me as it was the first year I went without killing a buck with either my bow or my gun and not for lack of trying. So when I got my muzzleloader tag this year, I was pretty excited to get out. Dave and I tried a few different set ups the first weekend of season, but nothing moved until after dark and it poured down rain on one of our days. During the week we had a lot of rain again, and work was just too crazy to get out.

We rounded up some babysitters for the boys for my final weekend of muzzleloader hunting and were bound and determined to get out whatever the weather. Fast forward to Sunday afternoon, last day, and still no deer for me. And to top it off, it was 70 degrees on October 21st in Iowa. I had zero expectations of seeing a mature buck. Dave suggested it might be a good idea to be over a green food source in this warm weather, but the one I wanted to go to, the wind was completely wrong for it. But we were going to try it anyway, we Scentblockered up, got the Ozonics running, and kept most of the windows closed, which made for a very warm sit! When we were finally settled, we were so hot, we had to peel off some of our layers. We weren’t in the stand but a few minutes and some turkeys came past us and some does started came in on the trail we walked. My spirits brightened a bit thinking that deer were already on their feet. With 15 minutes left before sunset, does started pouring out of the thicket that holds many of our deer on this farm. They fed in the Biologic for a while and then strolled on. They no sooner disappeared and Dave said that there was a shooter coming. I couldn’t see him until he hit the food source and boy, did he look good to me! He was only 60 yards but he was walking away from us. Dave made a noise to get him to stop and I shot. It was the first shooter I have had in range in two years so I was a little excited and got ahead of myself and forgot to let Dave give me the ok to go signal. But none the less, my muzzleloader tag is filled for 2012!
