November 9: Zach Playle

Zach harvested this 4 ½ yr old buck on the evening before day one of 2012 Missouri rifle season. This is the 2nd time he has taken a bow deer the night before rifle season, he did the same thing in 2009.

Zach and I basically only have one day a week to hunt. He is a senior in high school “already”. He plays baseball and football and also works at the local Hy-vee store. He is a very busy “young man”. We sometimes hunt after school if he doesn't have any other commitments. Last Friday was one of those days. I met him at the farm. He took a quick shower and put on his Scent Blocker. By the time we made it to the blind we only had about an hour and 45 minutes to hunt. We had only been in the blind a short time when an adult doe entered the field south of us. Zach was sitting to my right and I noticed horns in the brush to my left. The buck skirted us staying in the timber until he entered the field near a doe. She wasn't in the “mood” so he milled around and went back into the timber. We could see him leaving when Zach said he was going to try and grunt him in. I said to myself “Right wouldn't it be nice to be 18 again and think you're invincible”. Zach gave a series of grunts. The buck turned, came down the hill, entered the field and came to us on a string across the Biologic Clover Plus and Last Bite. Zach grunted to stop him and made a perfect shot with his “my” PSE EVO. He had broken a sight pin on his EVO. The Rage Extreme made this buck have a very “bad” day. This happened in the same area where Zach harvested his first bow buck back in 2008. Zach has grown up way to quickly. He will graduate high school this spring. Hopefully now we will have more time to hunt before I get too “old”.
