November 20: Scott Manifold

The story with the buck we call "Pumpkin Head" begins back in 2009 when I noticed a nice 140s 3 year old buck showing up on my Reconyx cameras often. The next year in 2010 we see him again and noticed he had the exact same shaped rack. A pumpkin looked like it would fit right inside his rack...therefore the name Pumpkin Head stuck! In 2010 a friend of mine, Brennan Davidson, actually arrowed the buck, but hit him square in the shoulder. We tried killing him in 2011 with no luck. He was all over the farm but avoided the hunters well.

This year a friend of mine, Scott Manifold from Michigan was coming to hunt my Iowa farm. Pumpkin head was just one of many on the hit list. We actually had 2 encounters with this buck at 50 yards before he finally met a Rage broadhead at only 15 yards. He came into our set from behind us. Completely surprised us and I got hardly any preroll of him at all, but thats how filming goes sometimes. We played cat and mouse with this 6 year old Pumpkin Head buck for a week and finally at 10:30am on November 20th we caught the mouse! He actually came in so fast that we didn't even know for sure it was Pumpkin Head himself but after retrieving him Scott held up his rack and then we knew the legend was down! It was a great feeling. He was a buck that really didn't grow over 15 inches over the last 3 or 4 years. He was also a "bully" buck that chased off other from the farm. Glad he is in out of the Pumpkin Patch! I really enjoyed hunting the last 10 days with my buddy Scott. He sure deserves this deer. He and his kids come every year to help work on the farm planting food plots, shed hunting and placing stands. His boy Ri is coming with a muzzleloader tag in hand after Christmas this year. Sure hope he scores just like his Dad!
