November 29: Alisha Coon

I love helping out Team Mad any way I can, so I was very excited when I got my tag for Illinois again this year. I am very fortunate to have this opportunity….Thanks Joe!! I took some extra time off of work this season with hopes that it would help my chances to land a buck. When I took a look at the weather report, I definitely got a little nervous.

There wasn’t much movement on Thursday, the coolest day of the weekend, and I thought my odds were looking pretty slim. Friday morning brought us nothing and I was definitely getting concerned. Dad, Mom, and I gave it another shot on Friday afternoon. It was definitely a hot one!! The sun was beating down on us and I decided it was time to ditch my boots. It was just too darn hot for all those layers. I just knew there was no way we were going to see anything in that heat.

But at around 2:00 in the afternoon, we saw a buck step out from the timber. I’m not sure who in that blind was more surprised. He was playing it smart and staying in the shade, so I had a bit of a wait ahead of me. The sun finally started to go down and he began to move more into the wheat field we were sitting over. After about two hours of impatient waiting I finally had my shot. Using my Thompson Center Dream Season Omega Muzzleloader, I was able to harvest my second Illinois Buck….in my pink socks! I was very much in shock, but still very pumped!!

This trip definitely has definitely taught me to stay positive. At the end of the day, these deer aren’t always going to do what you think they should. I should have never seen my deer, but I am so happy I did. Go Team Mad!!
