Eric and I were excited this year to be hunting deer the last week of August. Neither of us had ever been mule deer hunting or hunting in Arizona. We were not sure quite what to expect. Andrew Coffey of Wild Pursuits Hunting Consultants set us up with Lance Crowther with Timberland Outfitters in Flagstaff. On August 22nd we were on a plane bound for Arizona to begin our adventure for big velvet muleys.

Lance did not waste time putting us on great muleys. I got the first opportunity, but could not hit the mark. Booty's story is better than mine. We followed a walking path up the side of a mountain as we had a few time before. We were constantly seeing muley's on this mountain. As we are were walking in Booty stopped to look at a few fresh tracks going across our path and up the side of the mountain. All of sudden Lance spots a muley headed up the mountain around the hill in front of use. We quickly snuck up the path. As Booty's luck usually goes, the big 5x4 was standing broadside on the ridge above us. Booty stepped up, pulled back, and his arrow hit the mark. The buck ran over the ridge and expired about 100 yards away. He had harvested his first velvet muley.

The rest of the trip was my chance to redeem myself. Unfortunately the elevation must have gotten to me as I emptied my quiver and then some without success. We want to thank Andrew Coffey and Lance Crowther for a great hunt. Eric and I enjoyed the scenery and vast array of wildlife including giant muleys, elk, jackrabbits and bears. I recommend this trip to anyone looking for a great hunt. We will definitely be making the trip again.
