November 5: Doug Hampton

You can't imagine how excited I was to get to Iowa after the 3 year wait for a tag. With Camera's running for the past 2 months on my lease, I was grinning from ear to ear as I pulled the cards on the Reconyx cameras. My excitement turned to depression as I realized that I did not have a mature deer on either camera. My landowner asked me if I had any shooters and I told him that honestly I didn't. I told him that I was probably going to go hunt public land, or try a cornfield that my buddy had offered me to hunt. The next morning, it was raining too hard to hunt. Rod and I were eating breakfast when the landowner called. He told me he had a forty-acre piece that I could go look at. He assured us that there would be a buck worth hunting in the area. Ten minutes later we were plotting out possible stand locations on an aerial map.

The next evening, we decided to go in to the "forty", hang a double-set & crawl up & hunt. It just so happened that the tree we decided to hunt was in the perfect location for what was about to happen. At 3 p.m., I had just attached my safety harness and was in the process of setting up my GoPro. Rod started whispering excitedly "big buck, big buck!"... I turned the GoPro on and sat it on the seat of the stand. The buck worked his way up the ditch towards our location slowly. Before we knew it, he was standing directly under my stand. Rod was eating him up with the camera, while the buck was eating up my nerves, by not offering me a good shot. I refused to take a strait down shot, which was all he was giving me for nearly 10 minutes. finally, the buck turned to go across the ditch offering me a quartering away shot at 7 yards... The Rage Hypodermic blew through him and we saw a lot of blood immediately. It was a short bloodtrail and happiness was waiting for us at the end.

We were floored that it all came together out of nowhere. Rod laid down some spectacular footage. Seeing a buck lip curl at 1 yard was special in itself. Our nerves were shot after the closeness of the lengthy encounter. We can't wait to share this hunt on Dream Season The Journey. I promise you won't want to miss it!... Thank you Lord for another amazing hunt!
