I have spent the last several days filming my buddy Scott Manifold from Michigan try to kill a buck with a bow on my new Greene County Illinois farm. We only saw 1 shooter the last 4 days but we knew there were a few there because we had Reconyx pictures of them. Gun season came today and would hopefully make it easier to harvest one of those bucks and I had a tag in my pocket. Scott was behind the camera and we had a change in wind directions and a cold front coming through. The temperatures dropped and I was hoping the deer would move a little better. My hopes came true as we saw a monster emerge from the thick bottoms of a deep draw we were hunting. He had been following some does but wasn't locked on to one and and slowly made his way in our direction. I grunted a couple times to get his attention and he finally made it into a shooting lane at 85 to 90 yards. I had sighted in my daughters Thompson Center Contender last night and it shot so well I decided to take it this morning. I'm glad I had the confidence because I didn't have a rest...I was free handing it and steadied and took the shot. The buck did a mule kick and ran off. I wasn't sure if I got him or not but told Scott I did like the reaction the buck had. He said he didn't see anything in the camera due to the smoke from the muzzleloader. After a short blood trail he only went 50 yards and I had my first buck down on my new farm. I am truly blessed this year!!! Taking my daughter Elle tonight and my oldest daughter on Sunday. Can't wait to see what the rest of the weekend brings!
