January 4: John O'Dell

So this story really started about a year earlier when I met good friend Nick Anderson who is the ranch manager for Pete and Ava Denney’s Brushy Hill Ranch in South Texas.  We made arrangements for my daughter Madison to try to harvest her first ever deer with her PSE bow.  Well apparently lady luck was in full effect, as she harvested a mature 5 year old wide 8pt on the first evening of her hunt.  Nick told me that not all hunts go like this at Brushy Hill Ranch (that you can shoot a mature buck in one afternoon of hunting) and that it is a day lease, so the deer are extremely wary but the ranch is loaded with deer and every year hunters are lucky enough to harvest some really great bucks in the 120”-160” range for a price that the average hunter can afford to pay and there are no trophy fees.

Since then Pete and Ava were gracious enough to host the Bow Madness cast for spring turkey, hogs, and predators back in April 2013.  We all had an absolute blast and the hunt is featured on Bow Madness.  In fact, we had so much fun that we plan to do it again this spring!

Pete, Ava, and Nick have all become very good friends of mine.  Nick and I have done some saltwater fishing together and dove hunting and most recently he is learning to film/run camera for me.  So we decided to try to get a good representative buck on video at Brushy Hill.  My hunt did not go as quickly as Madison’s did but after some close encounters of the unfortunate kind everything came together on Saturday January 4th.  I was hunting out of the exact same blinds as Madison was the year prior.  Earlier in the fall Nick had planted some Biologic Texas Draw and Oats in the field in front of her blind.  Fortunately we had some timely rains in South Texas and the field was lush and the Reconyx cameras told us that the deer were hammering it.  So on the afternoon of the 4th after shooting a few arrows out of my PSE DNA we settled into the blind.  We set up the Ozonics, organized the rest of our gear and the hunt was on.

It did not take long for the first deer to come into the field.  Does and fawns and a small buck.  Then just like when Madison hunted an 8pt that was on Nick’s hit list showed up.  He eventually fed in front of our Big Game Redemption blind.  I ranged him at 28 yards with my Nikon rangefinder.  I took careful aim with my PSE DNA and was fortunate to make a lethal shot.  I was pretty excited to not only take a great Brushy Hill buck, but to be able to shoot a deer out of the same blind as my daughters first buck ever!  It was pretty special!

Anyway a big thank you goes out to Pete, Ava, and Nick!!  What a fun hunt and a special place that Brushy Hill has become for me.  I know the rest of the Bow Madness cast can’t wait to come down in the spring for some more Bow Madness Texas style!

Until then be safe, good hunting, and Happy New Year!
John
