March 27: Rod & DeAnna Owen

This year my goal is to get as many friends and family their turkeys as possible. So with that in mind our first trip of the season was headed to “Elk Ridge Trophy Bucks” with Jason and Amber Miller.

Archery season starts March 25th so on the 24th we loaded up on Flambeau decoys and big game blinds with long time High School buddy Tim Foley from Braymer my hometown. When we got there we did a little pre-scouting, then set up our blinds in what we thought would be a great area for a successful hunt.

Tim’s spot was great 2 archery kills the first day, ours was one ridge off but that freed up Tim to become our camera man so DeAnna and I could both hunt.

Day 2 dawned clear and cold 18 degrees. With our blind moved down the logging road in the dark, decoys set up, heater going and a very vocal hen 100 yards away we were in for an incredible morning. Our first visitors were 9 jakes. I tried to talk DeAnna into shooting one but she said “I am only going to shoot a long beard”. So after an hour of nonstop gobbling, DeAnna’s long beard came strutting down the logging road and she shot him at 8 yards, right beside “ol King Strut “ her first turkey with a bow and Tim laid it all down like a professional out of the second blind. Later that day DeAnna became camera man and filmed me cap off an awesome trip.
Special thanks again to Jason and Amber Miller from Elk Ridge Trophy Bucks and camera man #72 Tim Foley.
I couldn’t think of a better way to start off my friends and family turkey season! Now off to Texas for our Dream Season Vs Bow Madness Hunt.
