I had three things I was hoping to accomplish while hunting with my good friend Dave Garrett of Trophy Hunting Adventures. One was to harvest a mature bull elk. Luckily for me I was able to accomplish some elk redemption on the first morning of my hunt with the biggest bull elk of my life! My second objective of the hunt was to take my first mule deer in velvet. The third and maybe most important goal was to help great friend Dustin “Shed” Whitacre get on a big NM bull.

During the course of the week I had some encounters with lots of mule deer bucks. Two stood out in particular. One was a big mature wide/massive mule deer and the other was a mature management buck 4x4. After a couple of unsuccessful stalks for these two velvet mulies, I finally caught up to the 4x4. My buddy Shed from Mossy Oak was filming me and were able to get with 45 yards of the 4x4 using our Nikon binoculars. Once we were in position, I ranged the 4x4 one last time with my Nikon Pro Staff 7 rangefinder and pulled back the string on my PSE. At the shot, I hit the buck through both shoulders and thanks to my Rage Hypodermic he went down in less than 40 yards. Wow! Let the celebration begin. What a week I was having as I had harvested the biggest bull elk of my life just a few days before and on my daughter’s birthday. Then I followed it up with my first mule deer in velvet!
