Well, here we are again, opening day of Illinois Gun Season.  We found ourselves on the same farm Kyle smoked a 170” giant 2 years ago.  This story begins shed season when we accompanied Joel (owner of Illinois Xtreme Whitetails) on his annual shed hunt.  Kyle and I were walking a field edge, while Joel was hoofing the ridge.  The ridge he was on was loaded with sign after the late winter movement, and the decision was made to hang a set right in the center of it in hopes to catch a buck checking the bedding that lied atop that particular ridge.

We immediately had action this particular morning with filtering does, and a couple of scrappers checking them out.  This boy did exactly what we all hoped and planned he would.   Using the ridge top to move up to bedding from a picked corn field, this old, beat up warrior ended up only 20 yards from the stand.  I almost wish I had a bow, but this opportunity gave me the chance to test out my new Winchester setup.  Needless to say, the hammer dropped and so did this buck about 90 yards later.  The Deer Season XP-3 ammo was impressive to say the least, and my love for slug-gunning has grown exponentially.  Once again we have to thank Joel at Illinois Xtreme, and Winchester as well for my new found love of gun hunting again… Good Luck to all and most importantly, have fun and be safe!
