September 26: Dru Kramer

Nothing like having a plan come together. That is just what happened for Dru and I on this hunt. We'd been watching a LARGE group of bucks all Summer feeding on a certain piece of ground but soon after the velvet came off they all seemed to disappear. Luckily after doing just a bit more scouting we were able to locate a smaller group feeding in a field bordering a large CRP field. The fact that these bucks were showing up in the field in daylight and that it is 1/2 mile from any sizable timber gave me a hunch that they were bedding in the CRP. After gaining permission to go in after them Daltyn and I hiked in midday and hung a double set in a small cottonwood grove in the middle of the field.
Dru and I were settled in shortly after five and almost immediately had a doe stand up and work through the grove of trees were sitting in. We were feeling pretty good about things when around six Dru spotted this beautiful three year old stand up in the CRP and head our way. Shortly after, two more bucks appeared in the tall grass. They all began to posture and spar as they moved closer. After videoing them for about half an hour they finally worked through Dru's shooting lane at twenty yards. This buck brought up the rear and Dru made the short shot count, hitting him perfectly through the heart. The buck didn't make it thirty yards and was down. This is a great start to our Iowa season and I couldn't be more excited to have my youngest daughter take her biggest buck. Now it's Daltyn's turn.
