October 11: Jarrod Gibson

Team Ozonics back on the board with our 2nd kill for the Early Season Leg of Dream season The Journey. After hunting a couple weeks in KY and Kansas our next stop was Central Ohio with good buddy Ty McCombs of Whitetail Outfitters of Ohio. Our plan was to try to get at least one more kill in the Midwest before the October Lull hit. After a few days of hunting evenings only and seeing a ton of bucks just not anything we wanted to release the PSE on,we got with Ty and started reviewing recent trail cam pics. We noticed a very big switch in movement to right at daylight and just after light in food plots and acorns. One particular area was a beautiful Biologic turnip field in a bottom that the deer were in every morning that transitioned into an acorn ridge which then led into thick bedding. This plot had a couple shooters coming in every morning and leaving just after daylight. With the temps coming in the morning at 38 degrees we decided to do something unconventional for this time of year and try to catch one of the big boys leaving the food at dawn headed back to bed. This can be really hard to do without blowing all the deer out of an area going in. This particular spot was set up perfect for us to give it a try. The acorn ridge that the deer were using to travel back to bedding was just off a state highway and we had a stand location set just down the hill from it. That made it easy for us to slip in undetected in hopes to catch one headed back to bed from the Biologic just after light. We got in the stand almost an hour and half before daylight to give time for any noise we made to settled down. While we were in the stand in the pitch dark we could here some sparing going on and a lot of movement already coming off the Biologic. We immediately were getting excited just waiting on day break and hoping a shooter wouldnt have already passed us in the dark. With just enough light to see through the Nikon binos I told Steve I could see a really good framed deer at the bottom of the plot sparing with a smaller buck. Finally,15 minutes later he read the Play by Play script and started making his way in the timber right towards us stopping for acorns here and there heading back to bed. He came came within range and I let the PSE and Rage do the rest! I want to give a big thanks to Ty McCombs of Whitetail Outfitters of Ohio for this opportunity to make this all come together. He is truly top notch and he knows his stuff! High recommended anyone looking to hunt Ohio to look him up. http://www.whitetailoutfittersofohio.com/

Good luck this fall!
