November 22: J.J. Kolesar

Illinois Xtreme Whitetails delivers again! We made our annual pilgrimage up north to Illinois Xtreme Whitetails with Joel Barthel for the Illinois gun season. Once again it didÂ’n't disappoint. We went to a spot we fell in love with 2 seasons ago while shed hunting. At that time the farm was enrolled in cattle and it was wide open. 2 years removed from that shed hunt and no cattle on the farm over the course of the last year turned the timber into a deer highway, and we were planted right in the middle of it.

Believe it or not, we chose to sit in an old shanty house hunting setup constructed by some old-timers that lived on the property. We looked to hang Muddy tree stands the day prior during a snowstorm but didnÂ’t need to re-invent the wheel since the shooting shack was in the perfect spot. All the draws drained into this particular creek bottom and the geography proved to be the ticket. After does starting filtering through the bottoms, it wasÂ’n't long after that this old bruiser was trying to keep control of herd. 80 yards and a Winchester Deer Season XP bullet later, I found myself behind this old mid 30Â’s heavy hitter. Thanks to Joel at Illinois Xtreme Whitetails, and to Winchester. Good Luck the rest of the way to everybody, and remember to hunt safe!
