December 29 was probably one of the most fun days I have had in a deer stand this year. I have a good friend from Louisiana that has an awesome hunting place along the Mississippi River. This past summer, my Louisiana friend Taylor Reeves decided that he wanted to sublease one of the few farms that I have in Illinois. We worked out a deal that included a management buck hunt on his jammed up place in Louisiana. The plan was for me to come down for four or five days around mid January.
I got a call Christmas night from my buddy Taylor and he was informing me that with all the recent flooding throughout the United States that the Mississippi river was on the rise and that the island was going to be under water by January 5! We had to change our plan. I recently had a brand new baby girl on December 1 so getting away right now is really tough on me. Taylor urged me that if I could make it down just two days that he would almost guarantee me a mature management buck. I left going to the island late Monday night. The first morning was crazy! We saw probably 30 deer including one 140' 10 point. I really wanted to give that 10 point the ole Winchester, but I was there on a management hunt. I had to shoot a deer that was 4 or older and would score below 130 AND had to be a 9 point or less. Now thats picky shopping! The evening started out great with some early doe movement. After about an hour of sitting, we saw the deer that I came to kill. He was a 5 year old 8 point with a broken G3. After filming him for about 10 minutes we decided to let the Winchester go to work. The Winchester found its mark at 90 yards and the buck only made it about 60 after he was hit! Not only did Taylor invite me down, he also filmed the hunt for me as well!
Thanks to Reeves family for hosting me on an amazing hunt! One day and a mature buck down! Ya can't beat that!
