January 10: John Mabry

Jim Thome invited John Mabry up for one last hunt of the 2015-16 season. John got to the lodge, and was excited for the nights hunt as was everyone in camp. He was going to be filmed by John Williams. Once everyone got to camp, we had a good lunch, and were all ready to go. Jim had a special place for both John's to hunt, a beautiful standing bean field right behind the lodge. A couple week previous, Jim and I hunted this same blind that they were headed to, seeing many deer, and one particular old, gnarly 10 point with no brow tines. Getting into their blind around 2 o'clock, it was more of the same over the beans. Shortly after 3, they saw the no brow buck chasing a yearling doe across the field, and back into the timber. With the field filling up with deer, and passing a few nice 3 and 4 year olds, they looked up in amongst all the does and there he was, the no brow 10, at 50 yards! He had somehow snuck up the dip in the field, and worked his way to towards the blind without being seen. With deer all over right in front of the blind, it took a little bit of time to get the window open for the shot. Once that happened, it was time to let the PSE and Rage go to work. The shot hit home, but was just a little bit back so they gave the deer some time. After dark, both John's made their way over to the edge of the field just to see what the blood looked like to determine their next move. Once they got to the edge of the field they found blood and lots of it so they decided to go ahead and follow. The buck was straying blood and only made it 150 yards. The exact reason we shot Rage! All and all it was a great night to have John in camp, and to send him home with a buck was just put the icing on the cake!
