January 10: Jim Thome

Heading into the last week of Illinois archery season, Jim and I went out on Sunday the 10th with no success. The next day Jim invited John Mabry to come up to get a little time out in the woods before baseball starts back up. It was a great time with great people and to get a hunt in didn't hurt either. With John and John heading behind the lodge over some standing beans, Jim and I headed to the other farm over some cut corn. We were heading to an area that Jim had been getting pictures of many different target buck.
We had high hopes on our last hunt of the year with the weather we had. Getting into the blind around 2 o'clock, we were ready for a good night. Shortly after we got into the blind, the deer started to pour into the corn from every direction. We had deer on all sides of the blind. With does and young up and comers throughout the corn, around 4:30 Jim looked straight in front of us and saw a buck we had many Recoynx camera pictures of all season coming down the edge of the corn. This huge 8 worked to right in front of us to about 20 yards, and after a little shuffling in the blind, getting all the windows open we needed, Jim let the Decree HD and Rage combo go to work. With what we both thought was a great shot the buck took off out of the field and ran into the ditch behind us where he just stood. Jim looked at me questioning if he saw the hit right because the buck just didn't go down. We watched the buck for a good 45 minutes behind the blind. After walking maybe 20 yards back up one of the ridges, the buck bedded down. We both decided to quietly slip out of the blind and head back to the lodge to watch the footage on one of the tv's.
On the way back to the lodge we heard that John Mabry had also killed. We went to celebrate with them and get his deer back to the lodge. We watched the footage and confirmed the shoot, and decided to go look for Jim's buck. Coming in from the other side of the field, we walked right to where we last had saw the buck bedded and he hadn't move. This put the bow on an outstanding night and a great end to the season!
