January 31: Steve Frantz

The good lord blessed me with yet another awesome buck!
We set up this morning in Bama in a big block of mature pine timber in high hopes for a shooter to come cruising through looking for does. The lows this morning were only 55 and the highs today to get up to 75, but with the rut in full swing we new anything could happen. We hunted the same spot yesterday morning and seen a border line shooter that I gave a pass to. However after jacking up 35-40 foot in a pine that morning we felt, that we needed to move the stand about 50 yards further into the mature pines to set us up to cover more distance with the Winchester 270 WSM. We now could cover almost 100 yards in all directions.
We decided to hunt the same spot again this morning. This location is in a triangle with a crop field on one corner and two big food plots on the other two corners with us right dead in the center!
After after being in the stand for a couple hours and not seeing one single deer, I pulled my phone out to take a selfie of me and camera man Dustan. I wanted a memory of the hunt, as he drove all the way down here to Bama from Illinois to film me. As I had my phone out in front of me taking the pic, I heard a faint sound in the pine straw below me over my left shoulder. I slowly turned my head to see and there was as shooter coming in angling right me behind us down wind at 20 yards! I slowing turn back to Dustan as he was watching me in my screen on my phone, I said "shooter 20 yards don't move"! As the buck made his way behind us Dustan was able to get a beed on him and get the camera rolling. At this point I was beyond nervous as this buck was very close and down wind. He was straight behind us so I had to wait for him to angle out a little to make the shot, after about a minute or two, I was able to get the Nikon Monarch scope crosshairs just on the center of his body to make a quartering away shot at 50 yards! I smoked him! He ran about 75 yards and crashed on film right on the edge of a fire lane that we used to get to our spot. No tracking job or dragging job needed here boys, we got the Hunt V, drove right up to him and loaded him up! After recovering this buck I knew exactly who he was, a 4.5 yr old 9 point that we have had on Reconyx cameras for the last two years and in the same exact area! Thank you lord for another beautiful buck to make it my 8th kill of the season and also for blessing Jarrod with another buck this evening to make it his 3rd and Team Ozonics 11th kill of the the season! What a Journey it has been and a Dream Season come true!

Y'all stay after em,

Steve
