September 5: Bart Goins

What if Christmas day was delayed until December 27th? Would you be able to wait to open all those presents?

Bart had been working with his buddy Clay, owner of the newly established B&G Christian Outfitters in Kentucky to scout a 155 inch, four year old buck that had been haunting Clay’s farm. The two hung over 20 trail cams and captured in excess of 3,500 pictures of this deer over the summer months.

Bart spent the summer commuting up from his home in Alabama to help hang stands and get the farm ready to hunt for the season opener on September 3. His prime stand location was only huntable with a southwest wind. Any other direction and his hike in and his location would have given him away.

With thousands of pictures of a well-patterned buck, it’s not easy to make the decision to hold off on hunting, but Bart was committed to only sitting in that stand with the perfect wind. His patience paid off two days later on Monday as the weather shifted producing a steady southwestern breeze.

Bart drove the three and a half hours from Alabama to Kentucky and was in his stand by five. The big day, though delayed, was finally here. As if he was being rewarded for his patience, the buck was the first into the field around six. Twenty minutes later, the 13 pointer was within 18 yards.

Bart wasted no time putting a pin on this stud with his Dream Season Decree and together with the Rage Chisel Tip, the deer only ran 40 yards before going down.

Sometimes we find a deer or a spot that’s so good we can’t wait to hunt it, even if it means the conditions aren’t right. In the case of this deer, not only did Bart and Clay put the time in to pattern the buck, but Bart also exercised the patience to only hunt it with the right wind. So Christmas didn’t come on opening day, but it still came, and Bart wouldn’t have it any other way.
