"More Quality H2O"  A whitetail deer needs 3 quarts of water per 100 lbs of body weight daily during summer.  They supplement the preformed and metabolic intake taken from their diet with surface water.  Spring rain and antler development are also highly correlated meaning that bucks grow larger antlers during wet springs.  Data collected in a South Texas deer study found that spring rains accounted for as much as a 20" increase in antler development in mature deer.  The findings also illustrate the importance of precipitation, habitat condition, and food availability.  So with that said,  Mother Nature blessed us again in South Texas with ample rain at the right time in 2016.  So in July with my Reconyx cameras I located a new buck on our ranch.  A big mature 10 point which I aptly named the Big 10.  I was also able to pattern some other mature deer, but the Big 10 was number one on my hit list.  I was able to get some great Reconyx pics and video all summer.  In August I set up the Muddy blinds and I could not wait for the Texas Archery opener to begin.  On October 7th I was able to get out for the evening hunt.  I had high anticipation and I was super excited to get in the Muddy blind knowing this buck was very regular at a water tank at the back of the ranch and I was going to have my son Jacob running camera for me.  The afternoon started out slow with a doe and some fawns drinking at the water tank.  Then a young buck was next followed by a button buck.  All of a sudden the Big 10 entered the scene stage rage and things became pretty intense to say the least.  Well the big boy read the script and went right to the tank to get a drink.  I drew back my PSE Carbon Air and sent my PSE Carbon arrow/Rage Hypodermic deadly combo on it's way.  When the arrow hit the buck he jumped right in the water tank and then back out and then went less than 50 yards.  Wow!! I feel so blessed to harvest such an awesome deer and to do it with my son in the blind with me capturing the whole experience on film.  Now Jacob is up to bat so South Texas bucks beware as he will be chasing you Bow Madness style!
