After more than 30 years of chasing spring long beards I still feel like a little kid at Christmas on opening day!  I have also developed a passion for chasing spring long beards with stick and string!  So this morning we snuck into our Muddy Redemption blind on the edge of a biologic food plot that we planted last fall where the turkeys have been hanging out.  It was a slow morning as the gobblers seem to be really Hennessy up.  So they gobble on the roost then it gets quiet when they fly down.  Finally after awhile a gang of Jakes showed up on the scene.  Shortly after they left two long beards came in following a hen.  Unfortunately for me they kept their distance from my King Strut decoy.  So when it was now or never I ranged the closest tom with my Nikon rangefinder at 47 yards and took careful aim with my trusty PSE Carbon Air ECS 32.  I centered the dot and the pin on my IQ bowsight and was fortunate to put the Rage in the cage.  What an awesome way to kick off spring turkey season here in South Texas.  Now my son Jacob and I are headed to hunt with our good buddy Mike Stroff at SOE Hunts near Sonora TX so stay tuned to the DOD journal for more updates.  Be safe and good hunting!
