With deer season being long gone and a great shed season coming to an end I'm always excited to try and put a couple turkeys in the freezer. It's been a few years since Bill and I used stick and string on the giant Easterns that live here in IA. With kids that love to hunt we had opted to get things done as quickly as possible using shotguns so we had time to take them out also. This season we made the decision to grab the PSEs and give it our all to get a couple on film. The biggest problem we face in taking on this challenge is making our schedules jive so we can get out and film each other. This season would prove to be no different.

Here it is April 16th and Bill and I had yet to get out and hunt together. With Bill having prior commitments I was on my own for an evening hunt. Fortunately with the invention of the pop-up blind, bow hunting and filming have become much easier. I felt that if I had everything set up right and a bit of luck I just might be able to pull it off by myself. I was in the blind around 5:30pm with three Flambeau decoys at about seven yards. With two cameras rolling, one facing inside the blind and one on the decoys I would be able to cover all the action. It was a cold and windy night and I was beginning to question why I was out there. At about 7:10 three long beards appeared in the pasture to my right . I immediately flipped both cameras on and started recording the action. They slowly worked their way in to the decoys as I grabbed my bow and drew. At seven yards I picked out not necessarily the biggest, but the one that offered the clearest shot, and released. He flipped over backwards and didn't make it twenty yards before going down. The other two long beards proceeded to peck and beat on the dead bird for almost twenty minutes until I couldn't take it any more. As I spooked the other birds off I realized this was my first bow killed turkey in four years. I had forgotten how gratifying it was to pull it off with a bow. Now it's time to follow the kids around and see if we cant put a few more gobblers in the freezer.
