April 18: Larry Steward

Growing up watching the classic videos of Drury Outdoors like "King of Spring", "Sounds of Spring" and "April Fools" Heard Mark and Terry talking about "Uncle Marvin" saying "Somedays you can't do anything right, Somedays you can't do anything wrong."  This year seems like we are living this saying.

For Dad and I we have been absolutely whipped! We have went into hunts thinking we were going to thin the flock only to leave scrathing our heads wondering what just happened to us. But...Today we couldn't do anything wrong. I woke up early to nothing but gusting winds, warm temps, and everything wet from rain overnight. I couldn't help but think..."Why are we going out today?" I picked Dad up and headed to the farm to get there early since we didn't get one roosted there the night before. We arrived at 5:32am thinking we would have a few extra minutes to relax before heading out. I was reclining the truck seat back when Dad rolled down the window to let some fresh air in and all that rolled in was a very early awaking gobble! Both our eyes where bigger than hoot owls! We were then scrambling to gather all our stuff and start our run.

We got to where we wanted to go and our blind was blown away for the second time. We squirted past that into the field edge just in time to get the King Strut out and the Shady Lady out. As soon as our rears hit the dirt I looked over the camera to see a full strut bird alread on the ground starring down our decoys.  With the winds gusting our King Strut blew over on it's face but didn't seem to bother any of the on lookers and from there it was a show. All the way until..."BOOM!" Now we are packing for the weekend trip to Tom Ware's Missouri farm. Hopefully now, we countinue to have some of luck on our sides.
I'd rather be luck that good anyday!
