This turkey season has been an awesome one for my dad and I. In the youth season I tried to go for a head shot with my PSE. I missed by less than an inch, it was very close. Soon after I videoed my old man shoot his gobbler that had a 13 inch beard. A lot of my buddies from school had gotten birds in the first season along with my dad. The next week Eric Grover, shot his turkey too. Then, two weeks later I took my buddy, Jacob Williamson (Willi for short), out on his hunt with my dad. We did not get a gobbler but had a few close encounters. Although we came out empty handed, we had a great time. The next week was my turn…

We live in a town that is known for celebrating Syttende Mai, which is a Norwegian independence day. Every year about 400 people participate in the annual canoe race, two people per boat. Willi and I enter the canoe race annually. This year to show our spirit we had Willi’s mom, who recently opened her own salon called Insignia, shaved our hair down to mohawks. We ended up getting 32nd over all and 2nd in the youth division. Willi, all my friends, and I had a blast down town that evening.

After celebrating downtown the night before, we went into the woods to test our luck. All season I have not had much luck in blinds so we went running and gunning for a change. We were out in the light rain all day for 6 hours. There were strong winds and it drizzled on and off all day. We started working our way back to the truck and spotted some hens out on a plowed field, so we set up and watched for a while.

Like we were hoping some big mature toms entered the field. My dad gave them a couple quick calls to get their attention. The calls worked perfectly and they immediately turned and started heading our way. They were gobbling and doing a couple struts on the way. Both gobblers were within twenty yards and my dad gave me the go ahead signal. BOOM! Big gobbler down. It had a 10 inch beard with a 1 ½ inch double beard adding up to 11 ½ beard.
This has been a great season for me and all my hunting friends and I’m glad I could wrap up the year with a great bird.
