December 3: Bridget McClellan

What a 2nd gun season I had. I went to Hadley creek for the first Gun season in Illinois trying to harvest my first buck ever. This was the first time I have ever hunted. I guess you could say I got spoiled having my first hunt at Hadley Creek. I wasn’t able to harvest a mature buck during first gun season so I came back for the second season.

I am only able to hunt for a day and a half because my husband and I have a 6 month old that I don’t want to be away from for more that one night. On the last night of the hunt it all came together. We have been seeing a lot of deer during the trip just not a lot of bucks and no mature bucks. At a little before 4:00 we saw the first 2 does of the evening walking thru the woods. Right after that I looked out the window of the blind and saw the deer that I knew I wanted to take. My husband Kyle put the Nikons on him to make sure he was mature and then gave me the ok. After I got the ok it didn’t take long before I got my shot. I put the Thompson Center Encore Muzzleloader on him at 115 yards and he gave me a perfect broadside shot.

I couldn’t be more excited to harvest this for my first buck. The night before I shot a doe so this was a weekend full of first!! Thanks to Hadley Creek Outfitters for giving me the opportunity to harvest my first deer. And thanks to my husband Kyle for introducing me into the sport. I think I caught the bug!!!
