Well for Bart and I, our Dreams came true on June the 4th when we found out we were going to get the opportunity to be a part of Dream Season Workin’ Man. With that in mind we aggressively started getting all our hunts planned out for the fall. One of the goals that we pushed ourselves very hard on was to kill a 4.5 yr old buck or older with a bow, in our home state of Alabama. A state that has a 72 day rifle season. We have worked on our farms and planted Biologic everywhere. Good plan until a drought set in.

Now, what do we do? We normally like to hunt the peripheral edges of our farms, but with no food to pull the deer out of the woods into the fields its time to move to plan B. Rewind about 3 weeks ago we go into a spot that is in a hardwood flat ridge that is surrounded by thick cover. We saw sign of deer activity and decided to put out a Reconyx. At this time it's about 16 days until opening day. We give it 6 days, we go back and check the Reconyx and bam, several bucks on camera; including two big shooters that are 4.5 yr olds. We have no clue who they are or where they came from. We are game monitoring freaks but when it comes to mature deer in Alabama they can be very hard to position right in front of the camera sometimes. We immediately named one of the Deer “Big Heavy”. He is an awesome Alabama 8pter with lots of mass and good tine length. Three days later we came to hang our Big Game Sets and of course to check the camera and guess who shows up under the Red Oaks that was raining down acorns. Big Heavy. We even had early morning daytime pictures of him. We left with the hunt plan finalized and waiting on opening day to arrive.

Opening morning, October 15 found us setting on the Hardwood Acorn Flat Ridge before the first glimpse of light arrived. It had been warm for several days now and a northwest front pushed thru with a high pressure. A hunter’s perfect conditions had come thru. At 7:10 we had two 3.5 year old bucks arrive feeding on the acorns that were with “Big Heavy” in a lot of our Reconyx Pics. We kept a close eye where these deer came from. Minutes later Bart says SHOOTER! closing in behind the other bucks. Big Heavy it was grazing thru the acorn flat. I grabbed my Nikon rangefinder found a mark on him that read 28.4 yards. I asked Bart you on him, and he says Yep. I draw my PSE Bow Madness back and release a blazing fast PSE Arrow innerlocked with a 2 Blade Rage Broadhead and THWACK! A complete pass thru! We began celebrating as we knew The Southern Boys were on the board!

We waited about two hours before we began to begin to retrieve Big Heavy. We found him only 65 yards before the Rage made him tap out. Thanks to Reconyx a hunt plan was made, hunted, and came thru. This was a spot we were not even going to hunt, but with all the MRI we had thru the Reconyx Pics, a plan came together and we slammed an Alabama Giant! Thank You Reconyx for putting Team Alabama on the Board!
