November 12: Troy Dawson

Who would have thought, a hand me down X-FORCE given to me from Mark Drury would end up in the hands of Prairie Oak’s owner Troy Dawson. Troy is my cousin and had never harvested a deer with a bow. Mark had given me the X-Force and I had since upgraded to a Bow Madness XL so I chose to pass the torch onto Troy to test his luck. Troy approached me this past summer about starting up an outfitting service in the flint hills of Kansas where he owns 8,000 acres of prime whitetail haven. My mission was clear; to have my cousin enjoy the exciting world of bow hunting and capture the rush of shooting a mature whitetail on film. Once I got him set up with Reconyx cameras, big game tree stands and 10 biologic plots we were off to a good start. Troy filmed me shoot my 194” and keep in mind he has never ran a video camera in his life, the footage is good and now he is up to bat.

With impressive groups on the block from his X-force and confidence level high we set out on November 13th . With a southwest wind we were able to slip into a double set at 3:15 pm. At 4:30 pm I spotted a big buck about 200 yards away in the pasture looking for does heading away from us and out of sight he went. 30 minutes later he appeared again just at the edge of the biologic! Then the whole tree started shaking and I didn’t know what was going on and I looked down and Troy was very excited to say the least. His first taste of buck fever. We had doe right underneath us that had us picked off but the buck didn’t care he came right over to check her out. Troy came to full draw with the doe staring right at us and shot about a foot behind the buck! And he just stood there eating like a pig. So he fumbled around and got another arrow knocked and hit his mark, the shot was back and low so we backed out and recovered the deer the next morning. A 164 inch 9 point! Talk about luck, this was Troy’s first day out and his first deer with a bow. He is pumped about his X-force and to become apart of Drury’s TEAM KANSAS.
