November 29: Jarrod Cain

Story told by Jarrod-
My dad got me a compound bow this fall and I have been practing with it alot. But I am not quite comfortable with shooting a deer with it yet. But I really wanted to take a deer with a bow this year. So when it came time to get ready for shotgun season, I asked my dad if I could use a crossbow instead. He agreed.

Opening evening dad and I went to a ground blind and my brother Zach went with a family friend who was going to film him. Not long after getting in the ground blind, I started getting tired. I started to nod off when dad says "OH MY GOSH...BIG squirrel". It took a second for my heart to slow down and for me to realize just what he said. It was funny, but also woke me up. It wasnt long after that when deer started coming out. There was a 6pt that I was wanting to shoot and waited for it to get close enough. Then dad told me to look to my side. There was a nice 10pt coming in. Dad said I could shoot it. So I waited and when it turned broadside, I took the shot. It took me a few seconds to be able to talk...guess I was kinda in shock.

Dad thought it was a great shot, but when we went to go get my arrow, there was hardly any blood and the arrow was what dad called "watery". So we decided to go home and watch the footage on the big tv and decide from there what to do. Everyone agreed that it looked like a perfect shot. It was supposed to rain soon, so we waited till way after dark and went out to find. And find him we did. I was so happy. The best part is, my brother got one too.
