December 20: Linda Lurk

What a whirlwind trip! I have enjoyed sharing meals, sing-a-longs, and the excitement of meeting a very fun loving Gary Levox. I also laughed too many times to count with Mark, Tracy, Taylor, and Sister Barb and her hubby Jim! We revisited many stories from the past. We have enjoyed our annual family hunt for several years now. Mark and Terry have always been so gracious in extending the invitation to us and we have harvested does at both farms many times. This year Mark says, " We're hunting BUCKS!" Obviously….The prize just got sweeter! Sister Barb and I were in awe of Gary's harvest the first night in camp.

We both saw fields full of beautiful deer 2 night in a row, but not shooters. Monday evening as I prepared to pack on all the layers of hunting clothes that my son, Justin, so kindly gathered for me, I started with a "lucky" shirt I had not worn the two previous nights. I had a "dear" friend, Carroll Meyer, who honorably lost his battle with ALS and I wore this special shirt in his memory. He was a deer hunter and shared the sport with his two sons. I knew I could use some of his heavenly magic. It worked! My buck gave us a good show for what seemed to be an eternity! He finally came in close enough when he got his tummy full of the beans and corn he was munching on. I knew Jared's Thompson Center Omega, that my husband John has killed his buck with last week, could do the job. But had I sealed the deal? This buck bolted immediately. My cameraman, Joe Foster, and I quietly backed out of the cedar lined ground blind that Mark and Bric Steward had set up a few weeks ago. We headed back to camp to review the footage of the encounter. To our delight Joe Shults, who had just joined us in camp earlier that morning, had returned with Mark and surprised us with his 10 pt. Iowa beauty.

After looking over the tape, Mr Joe Shults and Mark both felt like I had made a clean shot. We loaded up for the recovery. My knees were knocking, teeth were chattering, and my heart went straight to Carroll Meyer. I prayed to him for guidance during our search. Thank you, Carroll! I am as proud as I can be of my 1st buck! Only 2 things would have helped sweeten this deal. I would have wished for my hubby, sons, and daughter to be with me to share this fun. I'd also wish that Barb could fill her tag with a buck too!!!  We still have another evening hunt so she just may have some luck yet!
