We had been planning this hunt for over a year and when the much coveted Iowa Tags were posted let’s just say Ben Maki was a Happy Camper to see his name on the list. This story takes a trip east to Kentucky as Ben invited John & I to his home state for an early season bow hunt. With my PSE in hand I was lucky enough to harvest a great 9 point in velvet on the last evening. Fast forward to one week ago, December 12th, I found myself in one of my favorite tower blinds which looks over a standing bean and corn field. It was a bitter cold day and it seemed all my deer were coming for the groceries. That night I harvested a big bodied 9 point, but that’s not what this story is about. Standing about 20 yards away from the deer I harvested was a beautiful 11 point 6 x 5 buck. This awesome buck was actually one of the first bucks into the field and I got some great footage of him. I decided right then and there that this would be the buck that I would leave for Ben to hopefully get when he comes for the late muzzleloader season.

I really don’t need to tell you where Ben and I were sitting on opening day of muzzleloader season! This night was a little different then my previous weeks had been as there were even more turkeys and the deer were getting to the field later. As the evening was approaching they started to pile into the corn and bean field. We were having a hard time keeping up with all the new arrivals. It was in this period of high traffic that Ben said I think that’s the buck. As if he grew straight out of the ground there he was already in the middle of the cut corn field. Ben and looked at each other as if to say “how did you miss him coming out.” Tense moments followed as he was not giving Ben any good shot angles and then something spooked the field and he went off into the safety of the cover. Ben kept sights on him and with darkness looming he slowly made his way back into the field. Walking slowly from left to right he finally stopped broadside 135 yards away. The next thing I heard was Ben’s Thompson Center Encore cracking off a round. The high fives began as we both knew the shot had found its mark.

It isn’t often that a plan like this comes together so completely with everything happening just right. I was extremely happy for Ben and can’t wait to get together with him on yet another hunt.
