Jaclyn had smoked her buck and now it was Mom’s turn. She was ready to see what might be in store the next couple of evenings after hearing and seeing her daughters excitement. The unseasonably warm first afternoon produced a lot of deer but no mature bucks, with a North wind on the way, my Dad decided to take her to a spot where he thought a couple of old mature bucks might be filling their bellies after the long fall.

They didn’t have to sit there long until the deer started to enter the field, one of the first bucks out was a old gray faced buck we knew very well. He was no stranger to the Reconyx cameras and was on top of the hit list! Several encounters by a couple different hunters over the years had put this buck knocking on death’s doorstep more than once but could never close the deal. The Thompson Center sounded off and Mom had her buck, a 7.5 year chocolate horn warrior. She couldn’t have been happier, this deer was her largest ever and she was elated she got one of the biggest bodied and oldest deer on the farm! -Jeff
