March 21: David Lindsey

Spring has arrived and it always finds me and my dad down south in Georgia looking for the first gobbler of the year to give a dirt nap! Opening day had my dad behind the gun and me behind the camera. We were fortunate enough to have the typical March weather in the south, chilly but we found one bird that didn’t mind sounding off earlier than the rest. We circled around him and set up about 200 yards from his roost in a Biologic food plot. He was gobbling on his own really well and when he hit the ground, I made 2 series of yelps and 5 minutes later we had our first dead bird of the spring laying 15 yards away!

This was one of those classic hunts that make you appreciate all the mornings you strike out chasing them all spring. My dad’s bird sported a 9 1/2 inch beard and 1 1/4" spurs, a refreshing way to kick off the 2009 season and an awesome kill to top it off! -Jeff
