After killing a Rio in Texas, it was the Missouri Turkey Youth Season the next weekend. My dad and I headed up to the farm hoping I could get my second bird this year! After riding the four-wheeler, and enjoying the beautiful weather I couldn’t wait to go hunting in the morning, even though I was dreading getting up! We had roosted a few birds the night before the hunt so we knew getting up early would pay off.

There was tons of gobbling and one specific bird was really close so we set up on him right off a logging road. As my dad was calling to him he was answering back every single time! As the sun was getting brighter, it seemed like the action was getting more and more intense! A yelping hen came all the way down the road and that is when our hearts started pumping. Not long after that we moved trees to close in on the gobbler. Five minutes go by and his gobbles were getting louder and we knew he would come up the hill to give me a shot any minute! Sure enough he became visible and I made the shot at about 31 yards.

It was cool that I had already killed by 7:30 in the morning! It was such an exciting hunt because all the birds were more vocal than on an usual hunt. Plus, to make it even better, this was my best turkey because he had a ten inch beard with 1 3/8 inch spurs and weighed over 24 pounds! Hopefully I can get lucky and experience the excitement of this hunt again!

Good luck out there!
