Well it has been a busy spring for me with work and family obligations so I have not had much time to turkey hunt. I had not been hunting since Dave and I were in Florida with our good buddy Scott Crippen in March. In fact it is the least I have turkey hunted since I first started back in the spring of 1984! That said I was finally going to have a few days to chase some turkeys with stick and string and I was pumped. On our first morning of the hunt things started out slow but Dave had been doing some scouting and we felt confident that if we were patient it would pay off. Sure enough around 8:30AM three jakes showed up and came right in and did a little dance around the king strut. A few minutes later a giant longbeard came on the scene and strutted right to the king strut from over 100 yards away. He was a true movie star and when he jumped on top of our decoy I couldn’t take it anymore so I ended our awesome hunt with an arrow released from my PSE Dream Season GX bow. What a hunt. It was certainly worth the wait.

Later we found out that the giant gobbler weighed just under 28 lbs and had 1.5” hooks! I have only been the hunter two mornings this spring and I have been lucky enough to harvest two turkeys with 1.5” spurs.

Dave and Amy are still chasing turkeys in Iowa and then we are headed to Central Florida to hunt hogs w/ our PSE’s with our good friend Bobby Mathews.

Until next time safe hunting!
