October 24: Dan Thurston

October 24, 2009…a day I will soon not forget. Two days prior, I had asked a good friend of mine, Billy Goode, to run camera for me. The 24th was day three of our hunt, prior to that we had only seen small bucks and does. Earlier in the afternoon of the 24th, I went to an auction just down the road south, so we were late getting home. I decided we would go below the watershed dam, right behind the house, where I had several sets over Biologic White Clover. By the time we dressed, sprayed down and got into the stand it was around 5:00 o’clock.

We had several does and fawns under the stand at 5:15…at 6:15 we had our first sighting of this buck heading north, 85 yards…He was just out cruising! At the time I was thinking of where to hang a new set for the next day figuring he wouldn’t be back! All of a sudden, he appeared out of nowhere only 40 yards from our set. He was cruising right toward us. He stopped at 12 yards and made a scrape. He then moved behind a small walnut tree. At that time I drew back and hung on for “deer” life with my PSE X-Force in hand. Forty five seconds later, he took the fatal step needed to get it done! What a relief! Great footage and a beautiful 8 point!
