November 8: JJ Kolesar

PREDATOR MADNESS AND BUCK SADNESS

Well, Kyle and I spend infinite hours preparing for the season with food plots, trail cams, treestands, and of course, shooting our targets. We do this so we can make it count when the moment arrives. Over the last few years, those moments haven’t been as often as we like. The morning of November 8th presented us with two different shots. The first came at 8:20 at one of three different coyotes Kyle was able to coax with his magical Team Illinois Rabbit Squeal. I was able to sneak an arrow through some brush just well enough to harvest my second coyote of the year. This was great and all, but as we were filming our cutaway shots a buck came charging in past our stand at about 35 yards. I was able to grunt him to a stop just before he was able to leave our sights. I let my second arrow in the last 10 minutes fly, and fly it did, right over his back! Once again I have been struck with the “Buck Fever”, so to speak. The Coyote is done, but the buck is gone. I guess that is why they call it hunting and not killing.
