November 2: John O'Dell

This hunt started when I was fortunate enough to draw an Iowa non-resident archery tag. When Dave and I picked the dates that we wanted to hunt I realized that I would have to miss Halloween with the kiddos. Fortunately for me I had the families support to head to Iowa and begin hunting on Halloween. Part of the deal was that the kids would send me pics before they went out trick or treating. I thought this might bring me some added luck! Well to make a long story short it took until November 3rd for me to harvest my buck but I am confident that the pictures and well wishes from my kids had something to do with my success!

Dave and I had multiple encounters with young deer until November 3rd. On that day we finally had the right wind to hunt my favorite tree stand. It overlooks the magical bean field. It’s the same stand that I have harvested my Iowa archery bucks the past two years in a row for Bow Madness TV. I was wondering if the third time would be a charm and if my good luck would continue. I did not have to wonder for very long. At first light we were covered up with turkeys and young bucks. Around 8:00AM I heard Dave say my favorite two words “shooter coming” so I instinctively grabbed my PSE XForce Omen UF and prepared for the shot. The 10 pointer worked right in to 20 yards. I was lucky enough to make a good shot and the rage put him down within 50 yards as we watched him fall from the tree. After my struggles in New Mexico earlier in the fall I was really pumped to have the monkey off my back. -John O'Dell
