December 27: Chris Propst

Late Season in North Missouri

Dad and I have had a great year this year, we've taken several good bucks, my sister Julie killed her first buck, and we've got to spend a lot of time in the woods.

Something that missouri decided to change this year, was the muzzleloader season. They pushed it back almost a full month.

Opening weekend of muzzleloader season, I took my girlfriend, Kimberly, out on her 2nd ever deer hunt. We sat the first night on our family farm on some standing beans, and I froze her out! It was 25 degrees with the wind and snow were blowing about 25mph in our face. We never saw a deer!! I was so frustrated.

The following weekend, pop and I decided to try the same spot, only this time, it was 20 degrees, 5 inches of snow, light breeze, and a rising moon.

Movement started off slow, then finally right before dark, bucks started coming out. We were watchin two 2 year olds, and I looked over and saw more bucks coming out! I finally got to say those magic words "Big Shooter!!"
I didn't waste anytime, the buck walked out into the standing beans, started feeding, then pop gave me the green light, and I let the T/C bark!! He only went about 5 yards, and then fell over!!

When we walked up on him, we couldn't get over how much weight this buck had lost in the rut. This is a 4 1/2 year old buck, we know from having two years of pictures starting when he was 3 1/2.

It just shows how good the right conditions can pay off and make the big boys get on their feet!

What a great year we've had, it's always kind of sad to see the season come to an end, but it won't be long and we'll be finding sheds and then chasing gobblers!
