Song dog double!!!

This time of year always makes me wish we hunted in Iowa..late season muzzleloader + cold temps + a hot food source seems to be ticket. However, Illinois late season means antler-less only...so after freezing our tails off to shoot a doe last weekend, we were ready to throw in the towel on the deer. Since we had some luck killing coyotes during the deer season, we thought we should give it a try.

After our first day back to school, we had to hustle just to hunt the last 45 minutes of daylight. We got set up overlooking a large cornfield, the same field, where JJ swears he called in a pair of yotes two years ago. We gave it a few minutes for things to settle down and then started calling. In only minutes, JJ spotted a coyote heading right for Mr. Fuzzy, I managed to drop him and quickly realized a female was close behind. Well..I shot three times at her and thought she retreated to safety, but I was still thrilled that I had put one down. However, after we went back to watch the video footage at home, we quickly realized there were three different dogs and I did indeed drop the second one as well!!! We were pumped..A coyote double!! The third coyote was the one that I had seen running away, but the second had dropped in his tracks in the corn stubble. We had to bundle back up and re-shoot some hero interviews but didnt complain a bit! Now.. just hoping for a snow day to cancel school to pursue coyote #6 of the year!!
