April 18: Melissa Payne

5:30 early last Sunday Morning I was up and ready to go before Louie! After the hunt we had yesterday with Ashley I just knew something would happen this morning. It was 33 degrees and I couldn’t wait to get under those birds and listen to them tear up the woods when they started goblin. 6:30 daybreaks coming very soon. We decided to hunt out of our box blind that we deer hunt out from. I knew the two long beards that came in with Ashley’s bird yesterday had to be roosted close to this blind. 6:45 we hear an owl hoot and there they were all around us. On a clear cool morning like this you don’t want to be anywhere else when this starts to happen. 7:00 there’s a deer, then another soon there is 7 in the field at once. I hunted this spot last fall very hard and didn’t see this many deer the entire season. 7:15 a hen moses into the field, then another soon there is 4 in the field. To my right comes 4 more into the field.

Ok, now I am really getting excited I knew he was close to the ladies. He had to be somewhere very close. 7:30 I happen to look at the right window of the box blind and several yards down an old loggin road there he was. He was in full strut and I knew he had a mission, to see what the heck Bocfechus was doing with the ladies. Yep, the strutted right up to him and give him a couple of smacks! My heart felt like it was goin to jump right out of my mouth. For some reason watching this bird come in like he did was a sight to see I mean literally breathtaking. 8:15 on the way home to get ready for church with my bird in the truck. What a wonderful day!
