Well, it had been two long years since we hunted with Troy Foster at North Alberta Outfitters (www.northalberta.com ) . Gregg and I had a great trip with Troy and killed 4 super bears. We were excited to get back up to northern Alberta and hunt those big black bears. We arrived to beautiful weather and the bears were out big time.

Gregg was up first and we saw several small bears on day one. The next day we went to a different bait that Troy knew held a great bear. After only 15 minutes in the stand that big bruiser came walking in. Unbelievably, at 20yards, he just spun and started to run away! The wind had shifted and he wanted nothing of it. He paused at 15 yards, but Gregg just didn’t feel that he had him good with the camera, so I let him walk. After further review, it would have been perfect. The camera lets another one live!!! It was still very early and in no time we started seeing more bears. This turned out to be one of the best bear hunts I have ever had. We had bears all around us. We saw the big boy again, but he would not come in. Several times that night we saw another really good bear, but he would not come in. Around 9:00pm, I saw him heading our way. Like the last time, he swung wide of the bait and was going to cross the cut line at about 30 yards. I got him to pause and smoked him!!! He ended up squaring right at 7 feet! We had our first bear down. That’s when Mother Nature let us know who really is in charge.

The rain and high winds set in and virtually shut everything down. It took hours just to drive the muddy roads in order to even get close to where we wanted to hunt. Gregg had many encounters with small bears and had a beautiful 6 ½ footer in on the last evening, but he was rubbed quite bad. That’s when the snow set in!!! All in all, it was a great hunt. There were several monsters seen, killed and missed. Troy and his crew have a top rate operation and we can’t wait to get back up there. Of course he called the week after we returned and let us know within two day of the weather breaking they had already killed over 10 bears including the big boy we saw. Murphy is surely alive in the bear woods!!!
