I was having the "whitetail blues" because I hadn’t seen a shooter since October 25th. I kept telling myself it was going to happen any day, but the slump kept going and going. My cameraman and best friend Klem had to go home unexpectedly for the weekend and I had called in Mike Magic Johnson, an editor and cameraman for Drury Outdoors. He was happy to come up for the weekend. He filmed Saturday and Sunday morning in high winds and then Sunday afternoon I decided to have lunch with my wife and 2 daughters. My 8 year old daughter Jessica told me that she thought I was going to get a buck tonight. I thanked her for positive foresight and headed back to hunting camp to get in a tree. I received a call from Magic Mike telling me some bad news. He had a call from his wife and their basement was flooding with water and he had to leave.

I was panicking trying to figure out how I was going to hunt on November 9th without a cameraman. I had a good friend, David Wood, that had filmed for me a few times, but was a rookie with the camera. I asked him if he would film and he said he would be happy to. We were rather late for it being November 9th and didn’t get into the tree until after 3pm. We saw a few deer over the next hour or so, but again no shooters. I was thinking the slump was going to continue when all of a sudden a large bodied deer came out of the timber and started walking down the corn field edge right toward our tree. He came in perfect and quartered away at 15 yards and I made a nice shot on him. He is a main frame 8 point with matching forked G2’s on both sides. He was a mature 4 ½ year old 150 3/8" with a lot of character. My slump had finally ended!
