April 4: Lucus Reinsch

For John Williams, a seasoned turkey hunter and avid outdoorsman, the Missouri Youth Season was always a time of year he looked forward to. Youth season was a yearly tradition for John, where he had the opportunity to share the great outdoors with a young hunter. Youth season 2020 was no different. One year ago, John met Lucus and his father Doug at a turkey calling contest, and extended the opportunity to guide them on a youth hunt.

When opening morning arrived, it was a chilly 27 degrees with winds from the east. The birds were shut down, but the boys did not give up hope. Feeling unsatisfied with the morning hunt, John pulled a card from a Reconyx camera that would deliver him the information he needed for their afternoon hunt. The trio took a short break and headed back to the blind around 3 o'clock with fingers crossed that the gobblers John had caught on the Reconyx the couple of days prior would make a grand appearance.

It was not long before the boys got their first glimpse of the flock. The birds slowly worked their way towards the Avian-X HDR decoy setup leaving Lucus with the opportunity he was looking for. As the gobbler worked into range, Lucus put the smackdown on him with his Winchester SXP 20 gauge and Longbeard XRs combo. With just one shot, Lucus, Doug, and John ended their Missouri youth hunt with smiles on their faces, and a huge gobbler in hand.
