With the Iowa Gun Season in full swing I knew there were a couple of deer that I would like to get and couldn’t wait to get my hands on my TC so I could reach out and touch one. I knew I had the food source if the weather would cooperate. On Sunday the 12th of December the perfect storm blew in literally with winds gusting over 30 mph and wind chills below zero.

I had waited long enough and it was time to get into my big blind. So we headed out and arrived on site shortly before 2:00 pm. From the moment we got into the blind I was seeing deer and turkeys. It was right at 3:00 when I got to see my first great buck, an 11 point that I guess to be in the low 60’s, but one that I was saving. The two bucks that I really wanted to get was a nine point that my wife had an encounter with during the bow season and a buck I named stumpy as he is not very tall, but pretty massive. They both are good bucks that are in their prime and won’t ever get much better. I had high hopes as we were seeing a lot of deer moving throughout the timber.

Then I noticed a shadow in the corn and pulled up my Nikons to get a closer look and there was stumpy chasing a doe in the standing corn. We repositioned to a different window and I stuck my Prohunter out the window and was ready, but just as I got settled in stumpy ducked back into the corn. It was about this time I looked out a different window and saw the nine point in the beans. I frantically changed locations again, got ready and squeezed the trigger on my TC and I knew it had found its mark. It was a fast heart pumping end to a great evening hunt. Darkness quickly fell upon us and we had a short track in the fresh snow to recover my awesome nine point!
