Hunter: Bric Steward
Animal: 5x4 Mule Deer
Location: Nebraska
Weapon: PSE Dream Season GX
We arrived at our hotel at around 5:15AM, yes i said AM on Thursday morning. We got our tags on-line from Nebraska's Game and Parks Department, and were ready for some sleep. After a short "power nap" we were up and going by 7:30 AM. We hit the road looking over some foot access public hunting grounds. While doing so we quickly spotted two bedded mulie bucks. We were on cloud nine; the bucks were bedded in a perfect place for stalk. But, we quickly realized they were not on public ground. So we started scurrying around and knocking on doors trying to find the landowner to ask for permission. We hit the jackpot! The landowner couldn't have been any nicer, and gave us full permission! We quickly constructed a plan and the game was on. Our first spot and stalk!! I was going to run the camera and let Brandon swing first. We gracefully worked into position. The first buck stood up picture perfect, however there were no pictures at the end of this hunt. Brandon had a swing and a miss. His arrow just clipped some brush and the buck was gone. But the second buck just ran a short distance, and slowly walked into a "coolie" near by.
We now switched rolls. I grabbed the PSE and strapped on the Tru-Fire release and it was my turn baby!! I pushed the camera into Brandon's arms and said "here film this!" He smiled and said "no problem"! We formulated another game plan and headed towards him. Thank goodness we were Scent Blockered up because the wind was terrible, it was raining, sleeting, and snowing all at the same time. Everything was going good. We were closing the bow-hunter's gap when all of a sudden the buck bolted from his bed. He ran up the opposite side of the coolie, and turned to run broadside to me. I checked him with the Nikon and then dropped a 60-yard Rage bomb on him! he ran about 150 yards before tapping out. While walking up on him I just couldn't believe I had just taken my first Mule Deer buck. I was so thankful I had practiced all summer to have the confidence in my PSE to easily take the shot on him. I was also so thankful that my buddy, Brandon, laid it all down perfectly! It is a smash hunt and one I will never forget! Now, it's on to the whitetails! -Bric
