September 26 - Lee Novotny

Lee and I worked hard all summer developing our foodplots and getting the property ready for deer season. Before we knew it, the season was fastly approaching, with anticipation growing as the days went by. Opening week the weather was warm in MN and the action was limited. We sat on stand a couple times, not seeing much. So when September 26 came around, the weather man was predicting a southerly wind, so we slipped into one of our creek bottom food plots we waited all year to hunt. Right out of the gate, we had plenty of action with a nice 2 year old ten point coming in about 6:00. Following him was two younger bucks, who were sparring in the food plot. We had lots of entertainment right up until about a half hour before dark when the bigger boys started slipping in & out of the canopy. First buck out now was a nice 2 year old eight pointer, followed by a 4 1/2 year old that we knew all too well. At first we thought he might be a new ten pointer moving in, but soon realized it was a nice nine pointer we had seen all summer.

He fed through the beans, into the Trophy Oats. We were getting nervous as the light was fading fast. He moved his way toward the Biologic Maximum where he provided a perfect quartering away opportunity. Lee made the shot. It was a little back so we let him go until the next day. We scoured the woods all morning with little luck and a faint blood trail. After a big lunch we went back to walk the creek bottom assuming he had headed to water. We walked about 250 yards when all of a sudden Lee looked up and there he was on the edge of the creek. It was a perfect end to a stressful day. This was Lee's first deer on film. All in all, Minnesota has been gracious to us this year.
